Essential II:
Organizational and Systems Leadership
Prior to entering this master's program for nursing education I had stepped into a role as an assistant nurse manager and it was during that time that I found my passion for instructing and mentoring. My skills are best suited for leading in the classroom or instructional setting. God gave me a strength to seek understanding where my skills are best suited, and I have been blessed beyond measure to receive this degree and impact the future of nursing and our community.

I have enjoyed growing my leadership skills through my career and education. I believe that you have to feed your mind every day to continually grow as a person, nurse, family member, spouse or parent. What we put into our mind is a direct reflection of what we will get out of our life. I believe putting action into words is a priority. I have shared some of the examples below on how I have spent my time and resources in this program. You will get a sense of my passion for leadership in nursing. No matter what role an employee is in, they are a leader. Our patients and families look to us to keep them safe, treat them with respect, and heal them to the best of our abilities.

Retention of employees should be held to the same standard as HCAPS scores. When you support your staff they are more productive and safer providers.

When I experienced a presentation on conscious bias and how we as providers pass that along without even knowing we are doing it, I was highly impacted. I have always advocated for everyone to treat each other how they want to be treated. Anyone who has been on the other side of healthcare, understands that this is not a priority for some. Walking in another person's shoes and seeing their experience from their perception should change the way a lot of people do their work.

I want to continue to bridge the gap from academia to the real world as I embark on this journey as an educator, mentor, coach, and leader. When we understand how the schools are preparing those we high, we can immediately pick up where they left off and finish the task.
