Essential III:

Quality Improvement and Safety

Quality improvement and safety are the epitome of evidenced based practice in motion. When a nurse elevates their knowledge by mastery level education, there is a since of loss of no longer being naive. I have struggled with some of the material over the past two years. A mental struggle with not being able to advocate or change things such as a broken healthcare system, over use of opioids, poorly supported leadership, and so on.

We have a duty to our profession to be involved in quality improvements and safety initiatives. Below I have shared how I have created education and tools to elevate knowledge. I have gained skills for  evaluating patient centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics.

The respiratory lecture for pharmacology centered around helping the students find new ways to learn material. I have shared the ways that I made this lecture interactive and fun. I do feel it is always necessary to ask for feedback from any presentation. I did not expect to have positive feedback from the students, it is really hard to hijack their learning by stepping into a few lectures.

The "new product" board was a safety and staff satisfaction driven initiative. This was committee led and collaboration that made this possible. We wanted to just fix the gnats of annoyance from employees daily work.

I am prepared to tackle all types of projects in my future after completing this program. When an issue arises and leaders will say "let's educate on it"; I'm prepared to say where are the gaps, where is the data to support the need, and what are the outcomes we want to achieve.
