Being a Nurse

My Philosophy

Being a nurse is caring for those who can not take care of themselves, and are at their time of greatest need. I care for all patients independently. No matter their status, payment method, or arrival. I have learned to care for the entire lifespan and I am a better person for it. I advocate just as fiercely as I would for the staff, my leaderhship, a new graduate, or my own child. For me, there is no difference.

My philosophy was inspired by Phil Barker's Tidal Model. Everyone is navigating their life as identified by different bodies of water. On those bodies of water each patient needs the appropriate vessel to navigate that journey. As nurses we have a responsibility to meet our patients where they are. We develop a relationship through trust and provide resources to help them safely navigate their journey.

My Career

My Mission

Patricia Benner’s theory of novice to expert has given me a boost of enthusiasm for my own career and how I will impact others. I have gained the confidence to know how to develop a new grad nurse from new or novice to expert or clinically sound.

A large part of my enthusiasm for this theory comes from my own educational journey that I feel has applied this theory without understanding the steps I had been following.

I began my career as an associate degree nurse in 2004, bridged with my bachelor degree in 2013 and entered grad school in 2015. I have grown as a novice to skilled through six years of adult nursing, five years in pediatrics and now two years in staff development. Dr. Benner (1982), described a nursing expert as being found “highly respected by both nurse and physician colleagues for her clinical judgment and ability” (pg. 406).

There are so many roads that lay ahead. Currently I am a clinical educator for a large health system and I could not be happier. Obtaining this degree has made me very successful in reaching my goals, even before graduating.

I will empower nurses to dive into their own career, with a love and respect of education, and building the foundation of healthcare providers in our community.

I will share my passion for learning and never stop seeking opportunities to improve myself.

I will live each day with my philosophy of nursing and my philosophy as an educator.

This has been my spring board to achieve clinical excellence and make my mark on nursing.
